Dr. Floyd Harris Flies the Lewis and Clark Trail |
|

Taylor, left, and Lindsey had an extreme adventure with their grandfather, Dr. Floyd Harris, this summer. They traced the Lewis & Clark expedition with him…from the air! Dr. Harris made sure they both took care of possible airsickness before he took off, though!

Several hours into the adventure, the trio landed at a little airstrip in St. Joseph, Missouri. This is an aerial view of the Missouri River, which Lewis & Clark followed to its source. It still looks unspoiled from the air, doesn’t it? |
|

Dr. Harris is grinning from ear to ear after completing a “perfect landing” at the airstrip in St. Joseph, MO. He is a seasoned pilot whose love of flying started ‘way back in 1976…but a perfect landing is always something to celebrate!

When Lewis & Clark reached the end of the Missouri River, they thought they would find the Pacific Ocean…instead, they found the Columbia River and had to follow it to the ocean. This is a view of the Columbia River in Washington, just before it reaches the ocean. Dr. Harris & his granddaughters had some rough weather along the way, but this day looks nice. |
|

Bad weather grounded them for awhile in Astoria and they had to “wait it out.” Dr. Harris flew his Cessna 182 RG that is “like new.” The man on the left, Greg Stanton, is a good friend of Dr. Harris’ who flew Alaska in 1988 with him and both of their wives.

Seaside, Oregon…the end of the trail…and more smiles! Lewis and Clark stopped here for two months, boiled seawater to extract salt and salted their meat for the trip home. It’s always easier on the return trip, isn’t it?

Here is Dr. Harris with his 13-year-old granddaughter, Lindsey. [In the background is the Pacific Ocean.] What a great smile he gave her, huh? Even more amazing is that they were still buddies after such an extreme adventure. |
|

Taylor is hugging her grandpa here [and sporting another beautiful smile.] There was one night of camping in torrential rain that got everyone “wet to the bone!” It was worth it to finish the journey, though! Dr. Harris told us that neither of the girls had seen the Pacific Ocean, so they were glad to pose on a Pacific beach!

Here is the Pacific Beach outside of Seaside, Oregon from the air. Lewis and Clark had an easier time getting home, but Dr. Harris and his granddaughters had the right idea…flying home! It was an adventure that they’ll treasure for the rest of their lives!
